Trukhaniv Island is a popular route for a walk among Kiev citizen. You can get to this island that has a waterfront view of Dnieper River by walking on the Footbridge.
The bridge was built in the 1950’s and features a massive all-welded construction. The length of the bridge is 429m, the pedestrian section is 7m, and the height above the water level of the Dnieper is 29m.
A few years ago it was possible to take a walk on the superstructure of the bridge by climbing the end tower, then walking up and down the bridge’s suspension cables, while carefully holding onto the railings! That has, of course, now been ruled out, and the end facades of the bridge have been welded shut with metal bars.
The Footbridge is usually crowded. There are tourists, photographers, fishermen, couples in love, and amateurs trying Bungee jumping.
The Footbridge affords an amazing view of the bridge-subway, which has a Metropolitan line and a view from the island to Old Town, and Kiev Parks, a river station.
The Dnieper is a navigable river throughout its length. From the Footbridge it is possible to view loaded barges and pleasure ships floating by.
When fog forms there is a sensation that the bridge hangs in mid-air!
I like this bridge and the space around it, and to get there I walk from the Metro Station Post Square.
And I also like to walk down the Dnieper’s promenade where I can buy a cup of coffee and enjoy sitting at the dock and watching passers-by.
You can also take an evening sightseeing boat tour from here, and trust me, Kiev is incredible at night.
